Expert Advisory Services

ASI's highly qualified technical staff have extensive networks into all the major universities. They make their expertise available to engineers, fabricators, designers, students and others who require technical information and advice on structural steel. By keeping up with the latest information from Australia and overseas ASI's free technical advisory service provides the best and most practical advice on steel construction. eLibrary and Library Services

The full scope of the ASI’s new and comprehensive online resource for the Australian steel design and construction industry is available, including approximately 1000 digital documents, images and video clips as well as all the ASI library records, sections on 3D models, resources for students and the ASI Bookshop. ASI also has the most comprehensive physical library on steel in the Southern Hemisphere with over 5000 volumes and 50 current journal titles, including overseas titles. Library services include loans, inter-library loans, library searches, compilation of bibliographies, notification of significant acquisitions and personal assistance to visitors to ASI’s Library in Pymble, managed by the Institute’s fully qualified librarian (8.30am-4.30pm, Mon-Thurs). Click here to access the ASI eLibrary.


All individual and designated corporate members receive copies of the ASI’s flagship quarterly news magazine, steel Australia. The bi-annual technical journal, Steel Construction is supplied in PDF unless a hard-copy is specifically requested. There is also access to read steel Australia magazine and to all past issues of Steel Construction via the members’ only section of the website. Members are entitled to a generous discount on purchases from our Bookshop.

Technical Presentations, Seminars, Conferences and Conventions

ASI State and Regional Committees and Head Office staff regularly organise technical presentations on topics of interest to the industry. To ensure ASI retains its role as a peak industry body ASI members are invited to attend conferences in Australia and overseas. Staff regularly present papers at international and domestic conferences, communicating the benefits and behaviour of structural steel, as well as changes in the industry. * Current corporate financial members are all those categories of ASI membership (with the exception of individual and student members) who have paid their ASI membership fee for the current financial year.

Specialist groups

Members can compare notes with like-minded practitioners and industry experts through involvement with specialist groups convened by the ASI addressing pertinent steel industry issues. Interest groups cover local content, sustainability, safety, compliance, fabricators, detailers, engineering and construction. The ASI also hosts special interest groups focussed on coated steel products - Steel Shed Group, Steel Storage Manufacturers Group, Sheet and Coil Distribution Committee, Roll-formers Committee, Gutters and Guardrail workgroups.
