This volume looks at materials and methods of steel fabrication practice such as cutting, forming and welding.

Aspects of detailing which affect producibility, productivity, project cost and detail soundness are considered here. The purpose of this handbook is to provide sufficient information for a trainee structural steel detailer to learn the fundamentals of how to detail most members and connections in a simple steel-framed building. The text includes a general section on computer aided drafting but is basically written from the viewpoint of traditional manual drafting. Some engineering fundamentals are included to help in understanding the procedures.

This is an introduction to the design and construction of steel framed buildings with steel and concrete floors, focusing on low to medium rise buildings. It provides builders and engineers with the most important issues that need to be addressed and discussed with other key decision makers in a logical progression so that the end result is a cost-effective, low risk and readily constructible building with the flexibility for future alterations with changing tenancy. The publication has been laid out so that it may be read from cover to cover or simply used as a reference by going to the colour-coded chapter of interest. It commences with the fundamental components of a composite steel framed building, continues with the design and construction aspects to be considered and concludes with the specific features of various building types. This design aid to the limit states standard AS 4100-1998 considers open type hot-rolled sections and standard open sections manufactured from hot-rolled plate. Data includes among others: dimensions and section properties, design section capacities, values for fire design, design capacities for members subject to bending, shear , bearing, axial compression, axial tension and combined actions. This new edition was published in October 2009 and updates the third edition of 1999.

This is the most comprehensive set of member design aids for structural steel hollow sections, providing information on the full range of Australian manufactured hollow sections complying with AS 1163. Included are tables associated with section properties, surface areas, telescoping sections, maximum design loads for simply supported beams with full lateral restraint, design section moment and web capacities, design moment capacities for members without full lateral restraint and design member capacities in axial compression/tension.

This consolidates all the design capacity tables contained in the individual simple connection design guides into one volume for easy reference and comparison. These tables aim to replace the simple connections section of AISC Standardised Structural Connections (3rd edition, 1985) and also provide typical details for web side plate, flexible end plate and angle cleat connections. This publication will assist structural engineers to develop as much confidence in the design of composite, steel-framed, multi-storey buildings as they are likely to have in more traditional reinforced concrete multi-storey buildings. The publication consists primarily of a set of design calculations covering most aspects of the design and detailing of this type of building. This design guide provides a recommended design model for the extended bolted moment end plate connections when used for beam splices, open connections in portal frames and mitred knee connections in portal frames. As well as a recommended design model, it contains detailing guidance, design examples and seven design capacity tables suitable for beam splices and apex connections.

This design guide provides a recommended design model for beams directly welded to a column to achieve a rigid connection. As well as a recommended design model, it contains detailing and fabrication guidance, assessment of the need for column stiffening, procedures for the design of column stiffening, two design examples and six design capacity tables for various weld configurations. This design guide describes the connection, provides generalised detailing for the connection, a recommended design model for the design of the connection, details methods of assessing whether column stiffening is required and if so how this can be designed, provides two design examples and six design capacity tables derived for selected geometries using the recommended design model.

This design guide provides a recommended design model for beams or rafters welded to an end plate which is in turn bolted to a column. It uses the same design model as Design Guide 10 for the design of the end plate and a similar assessment procedure as Design Guide 11 for the assessment of the need for column stiffening and procedures for the design of column stiffeners. It contains detailing and fabrication guidance, a worked example and nine design capacity tables suitable for beams or rafters inclined at between eighty and one hundred degrees to the column.

This design guide provides recommended design models for three splice types – bolted cover plate splices, bolted/welded cover plate splices, welded splices. As well as the recommended design model, it contains detailing guidance, three design examples and thirteen design capacity tables.

Design Guide 1 contains both design information and practical information on the types of structural bolts used in structural steel connections in Australia at the present time. The design guide provides information on dimensions, design, specifications for bolts, certification of bolts, fabrication and erection issues related to bolts and bolting. It is aligned with AS 4100-1998 and supersedes AISC "Bolting of steel structures", 3rd ed., 1990.

Design Guide 2 contains practical information on the welding processes used to fabricate structural steel connections in Australia at the present time. It does not however contain design information. The guide is aligned with AS 4100-1998 and AS 1554.1-2004 and is intended to be a basic primer on all aspects of welding as applied to structural steel connections.

Design Guide 3 covers the web side plate connection, a simple connection in terms of AS 4100-1998. It references Handbook 1 for a number of design solutions used in the recommended Design Model for the web side plate connection and is aligned with AS 4100-1998. The design guide describes the web side plate connection, provides generalised detailing for the connection, a recommended design model involving 10 separate design checks, two design examples and 6 design capacity tables derived for a selected geometry using the recommended design model. This publication supersedes two sections in AISC "Design of structural connections" by Hogan, T. J. and Thomas, I. R., 1994.

This handbook summarises standard fire test data for fire protection materials applied to steel members and composite beams. It assesses the materials on a consistent basis to enable the required thickness to be ascertained without reference to individual test reports. Values of fire protection thickness determined in accordance with this handbook may be deemed to satisfy the ASI document "Guidelines for assessment of fire resistance of structural steel members". All data was obtained from tests which satisfy the relevant requirements of AS 1530, Part 4 -1985. This design aid helps steel designers arrive at a cost-effective structural solution to satisfy functional requirements for portal frame buildings. It assists with the preliminary selection of UBs and WBs for columns and rafters of pinned base steel portal frames and is not intended for use in final design but rather to study the effect of variations in frame spacing, section size, eaves height etc. and for rapidly checking existing design. This publication in the working stress design method, has been fully superseded by the Design capacity tables for structural steel, volumes 1 and 2, and is only of interest in determining the design capacities of older steel up to and around 1987.
