Steel IT Systems Group

Steel IT world imageThis group comprises the IT and supply chain specialists from the major steel manufacturers, distributors and rollformers in Australia and New Zealand. The Group was formed in 2004 to look at supply chain improvements with a priority on standardising B2B / e-Commerce standards for the industry in Australia / New Zealand.

The main purpose of the e-Commerce Group is to assist the Australian and New Zealand steel industry through the development and application of open architecture electronic trading solutions across the industry base – this can categorised into four broad areas:

  • Utilisation of existing B2B protocols to facilitate efficient transactions within the industry
  • Identify & action opportunities to improve the industry efficiency (e.g. smarter use of barcodes)
  • Identify & action cost reduction opportunities for the industry (e.g. implementation of the toll processing document discussed at the last meeting)
  • Promote Australian fabricated steel in terms of quality and traceability (e.g. making test certificates widely available via a web query service and promoting that facility to the engineering, government bodies etc.)

  • Maintain existing B2B protocols/documents for electronic trading across the industry including maintaining the ASI e-Commerce website
  • As required, develop new B2B protocols/documents for electronic trading across the industry
  • Maintain industry guidelines for use of barcodes on product labeling (with assistance from GS1)
  • Promote the wider adoption of the ASI B2B protocols though case studies, industry forums, ASI journals etc.
  • Work with other industry groups to ensure the ASI B2B protocols maintain relevance. Where appropriate investigate and assess the adoption of alternate protocols where there is superior benefit to the industry (e.g. hardware industry working guidelines, transport & logistics standards)
